Dallie Brown Thomas, Jr. -- Electrician

Dallie Brown Thomas, Jr., who was called Junior, was born on February 8, 1923 in Trigg County, Kentucky, the oldest of two children born to Dallie Brown Thomas and Ollie Mae Downs Thomas.  Dallie, Sr. and Ollie Mae were both natives of Trigg County.  Dallie, Sr. was a farmer and was a grandson of Perry Thomas.  Junior’s sibling was Earl Benard Thomas, born in 1925 and married Mary Ann Sumner.  Junior had seven half-siblings from his father’s first marriage to Willie Mae Thomas.   They were Ted Thomas, born in 1901 and married Beulah Sumner; Elmer Rowden Thomas, born in 1904 and married Marie E. Lance; Stella Grace Thomas, born in 1906 and married Chester Allen Sumner and later married Ernest Clyde Finley; Lula Maude Thomas, born in 1908 and married James Preston Sumner and later married Charles Dell Taylor III; Edna Ruth Thomas, born in 1912 and married Lloyd Seldon Downs and later married Meredith Simmons Christian; Bessie Mae Thomas, born in 1915 and married Herman Taylor Adams; and James Amos Thomas, born in 1918 and married Virginia Frances Futrell.

Junior grew up on Donaldson Creek and attended Upper Donaldson School and Trigg County High School.  On January 19, 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Army.  He spent eleven months serving in the Solomon Islands and other South Pacific islands.  He sustained a leg injury while overseas which presented a healing problem.  As a result, he was returned to the States for hospitalization for treatment and recuperation.  He was discharged from the Army on December 15, 1945.

On May 30, 1945 Junior married Virginia Lucille Gardner in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.  Lucille was born on May 26, 1922 in Golden Pond, Kentucky, the daughter of James Monroe Gardner, Sr. and Allie Lucille “Pink” Atwood Gardner, both natives of Trigg County. James Monroe was a farmer. Junior was stationed at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia at the time of their marriage and they lived there until his discharge from the service.  

Junior and Lucille lived for a short time in Akron, Ohio after his discharge from the army before returning to Trigg County and working on the family farm.  In September 1950, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Junior went to work for the civil service with the Department of the Army at Fort Carson, Colorado. Junior worked as an automotive mechanic specializing in fuels and electrical systems. He worked as a mechanic at Fort Carson until his retirement.  Lucille was also employed with the U. S. military for over 30 years in a civil service position in Colorado Springs.

Junior and Lucille were the parents of three children, Michael Theron Thomas, born in 1946 and married Christine Stout; Sharon Faye Thomas, born in 1948 and married Paul Lynn Krull; and Janice Kay Thomas, born in 1953 and married Kenneth William Malcolm.

Dallie B. Thomas, Jr. died on October 24, 1982 at the age of 59 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Denver, Colorado after a long battle with cancer.  His body was returned to Kentucky where he was buried in the East End Cemetery in Cadiz.  His wife, Lucille, died on June 17, 2005 at the age of 83 at the Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs.  She was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs.

James Raymond Hughes -- Grocery Worker

James Raymond Hughes was born on March 5, 1916 in the Warrenton community of Trigg County, Kentucky. He was the eighth of ten children born to Luther Lee Hughes and Mattie Patterson Light Hughes.  Luther was a farmer and he and Mattie were both natives of Trigg County.  Raymond was a descendant of Starkie Thomas. 

Raymond’s siblings were Harmon Marcellious Hughes, born in 1906 and married Georgia Lyle New and then married Mary Dixon Townsend Clayton; Verna Elizabeth Hughes, born in 1904 and married Clinton Harrell Stalons; Mary Catherine Hughes, born in 1906 and married Thomas Edward Mize; Lula Gertrude Hughes, born in 1908 and married John Robert Flood; Luther Bertram Hughes, born in 1909 and married Edna Earl Thomas; Edna Lorene Hughes, born in 1912 and married Charlie Calvert Flood; Richard Stanley Hughes, born in 1914 and married Avernell Boyd; Sarah Loutisha Hughes, born in 1919; and Thomas Alton Hughes, born in 1921 and married Hazel Douglas Lancaster.

Raymond attended the Trigg County rural schools After completing his elementary education, he began working as a farmer, a job he pursued for several years.

On February 15, 1941, he married Susie Gertrude Hammonds.  Susie was born on February 15, 1922, the only daughter of William Clarence Hammonds and Lillie Perry Mason Hammonds.  William was a farmer and carpenter and was a native of Hopkins County, Kentucky.  Lillie was a native of Trigg County.

As a young man, Raymond had worked as a farmer.  In the early 1950’s, he operated a service station in Cadiz.  Raymond left the gas station in 1954 and began working in the grocery business where he was well known for his skills as a meat cutter or butcher.  He worked in the grocery business for the rest of his life.  Susie was a homemaker.

Raymond and Susie were the parents of two daughters, Linda Joyce Hughes, born in 1950 and married Aubrey Clarence Choate and Lillie Sue Hughes, born in 1962 and married Jeffrey Alan Bostick.

Raymond died on July 31, 1998 at the age of 82 at the Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.  He was buried in the East End Cemetery in Cadiz.  Susie died on November 3, 2007 at the age of 85 at the Trigg County Hospital in Cadiz.  She was buried in the East End Cemetery next to her husband.
