Starkie T. Bridges -- Early Trigg County Kentucky Pioneer

Starkie Bridges Tombstone with first wife Minerva to the left and second wife Elizabeth to the right

Starkie T. Bridges was the second child of William Bridges and Mary Thomas and was born on February 15, 1823, in Trigg County, Kentucky.  On December 30, 1852, he married Minerva Pruda Hixon, sister of Elizabeth Hixon who was the wife of his brother Orren.  Minerva was born on September 25, 1834 in Grainger County, Tennessee. They had one child, a daughter, Martha Frances.  Minerva died at the early age of 20 on February 24, 1855.  On June 3, 1862, Starkie married his second wife, Elizabeth Lawrence, a resident of Trigg County who was the daughter of Alfred Lawrence.  Starkie and Elizabeth had eight children, four girls and four boys.

He acquired property and built a house about a half-mile west of where his grandfather Drury settled in 1804, and lived there until his death on November 15, 1896.  A nephew, who wrote his obituary for the Kentucky Telephone, said "...He was a member of the Donaldson Creek Baptist Church, funeral was by Revs Samuel Sumner and C. H. Herndon.  He was buried in a suit of clothes he had purchased several years before, just for that purpose.  He also had laid away enough money with which to pay his funeral expenses."  This was years before anyone ever thought of what today is called "prepaid funeral expenses."  The account went on to say that he bore his three-year unnamed affliction with the fortitude of a real Christian.  His wife Elizabeth, who outlived him by 30 years died on February 8, 1926.  Both are buried in the William Bridges Cemetery.

Their eight children were: Laura, Ida, Starkie E., Mary Priscilla, Sanford F., Drew Manley, Effie and John Robert.
