James Clark Thomas -- Korean War Casualty


 

 

James Clark Thomas  was a Korean War Era casualty who died on July 7, 1953.  New Jersey was his home of record and enlistment records show that he enlisted  in the US Air Force from Paulsboro in Gloucester County.  He was the son of Jefferson Leroy Thomas and Lillian Singely.

James Clark Thomas was an Airman First Class and served as a crew member of a B-29A Superfortress Bomber with the 28th Bomber Squadron, 19th Bomber Wing.  He was serving with this unit in Korea during the Korean War. The aircraft  was called the "Star Duster".

On July 7, 1953 his aircraft was returning from a tactical bombing mission over Korea  The plane was flying in very poor weather and it was low on fuel. It crashed during the landing approach to Pohang Air Base (K-3) in the North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. There were thirteen airmen aboard the aircraft and all were killed. Remains for four of the airmen about the plane were not recovered, including the remains of Airman Thomas.  He was 22 years old at the time of his death. A memorial grave site for Airman Thomas is located in the New Saint Josephs Cemetery in Swedesboro, Glouchester County, New Jersey.

Airman First Class Thomas was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

(James Clark Thomas was the son of Jefferson Leroy and Lillian Singley Thomas, the grandson of James Clark, Jr. and Myrtle Booze Thomas and the great grandson of James Clark "Muck" and Mary Ann Fowler Meeks Thomas.  James Clark "Muck" was the fourth child of James Jr. and Martha Ethridge Thomas.  James, Jr. was the sixth child of James and Mary Standley Thomas.)
